Banning DDT: How Citizen Activists in Wisconsin Led the Way, by Bill Berry

Banning DDT: How Citizen Activists in Wisconsin Led the Way, by Bill Berry

    Books $25.00 $15.00
    Rated 0 out of 5

In 1968, DDT went on trial in Madison, Wisconsin. In Banning DDT: How Citizen Activists in Wisconsin Led the Way, Bill Berry details how the citizens, scientists, reporters, and traditional conservationists drew attention to the harmful effects of “the miracle pesticide” DDT, which was being used to control Dutch elm disease.

Berry tells of the hunters and fishers, bird-watchers, and garden-club ladies like Lorrie Otto, who dropped off twenty-eight dead robins at the Bayside village offices. He tells of university professors and scientists like Joseph Hickey, a professor and researcher in the Department of Wildlife Management at the University of Wisconsin–Madison, who wept about the suppression of some of his early DDT research. And he tells of activists like Senator Gaylord Nelson and members of the state’s Citizens Natural Resources who rallied for the cause.

Today, virtually every reference to the history of DDT mentions the impact of Wisconsin’s battles. Banning DDT is a compelling story of how citizen activism, science, and law merged in Wisconsin’s DDT battles to forge a new way to accomplish public policy.

Bringing Nature Home, by Douglas W. Tallamy

    Books $22.00
    Rated 0 out of 5
As habitat destruction accelerates, there are increasing pressures on wildlife populations. There is an important step toward reversing this alarming trend: everyone with access to a patch of earth can make a significant contribution toward sustaining biodiversity.

There is an unbreakable link between native plant species and native wildlife — native insects cannot, or will not, eat alien plants. When native plants disappear, insects disappear, impoverishing the food source for birds and other animals. In many areas, habitat destruction is so extensive that local wildlife is in crisis and headed toward extinction.

Bringing Nature Home has sparked a national conversation about the link between healthy local ecosystems and human well-being. By acting on Doug Tallamy’s practical recommendations, everyone can make a difference.

The perfect antidote to the belief that nature happens somewhere else. If you have a backyard, this book is for you — get outside and learn about the wildlife around you, and then do something to make a haven for species at risk.

Invasive Plants of the Upper Midwest, by Elizabeth J. Czarapata

Invasive Plants of the Upper Midwest: An illustrated guide to their identification and control, by Elizabeth J. Czarapata

    Books $30.00 $22.00
    Rated 0 out of 5

Czarapata, a Wild Ones member and founder of the Wind Lake Environmental Club, posthumously received the Wisconsin Council on Invasive Species 2005 Invader Crusader Award. This in-depth guide starts by explaining what invasive plants are, and why it’s important to control them. Index includes common names, and four-color closeups and long shots throughout the book assist in identification. The most effective techniques for control are discussed, and invasive plants of major concern are highlighted because of their ability to aggressively spread and cause both ecological and economic damage. Native plants which also sometimes need control are also discussed, not because these plants should be eliminated from the landscape, but to encourage native plant diversity which may not be achieved if the more aggressive natives have free reign.
